Amrita and ambrosia are the same word. Sanskrit a-mrta is not-dead; Greek a-mbrotos is not-mortal. Both are built from the negative prefix and the Indo-European root for dying, both name the food or drink that makes gods immortal, and neither language borrowed the idea from the other. Two mythologies inherited one word and one story.

Where it comes from

The story of Amrit

The correspondence between amrta and ambrotos is one of the cleaner demonstrations of Indo-European inheritance, because it involves both the form and the story. The negative prefix is a- in both languages, from an original n-. The root for dying gives Sanskrit mrta, Greek brotos, Latin mortalis and English murder, the Greek b arising from a regular sound change in a cluster the language could not otherwise pronounce. And in both traditions the word names a substance that the gods consume and mortals do not, obtained in Greek myth from an unspecified source and in Indian myth from the churning of the cosmic ocean. Whether the story traveled or was inherited is argued over; the word was certainly inherited. The Sikh use is later and deliberate: Guru Gobind Singh gave the term to the initiation rite in 1699.

Meaning

Sanskrit amrta, immortal or the nectar of immortality

From Sanskrit a-, not, and mrta, dead, from the root mr, to die, which is the same root as Latin mors and English murder. Amrita is the nectar produced by the churning of the ocean in Hindu myth, the drink that makes the gods deathless. In Sikhism amrit is the sweetened water used in the initiation ceremony of the Khalsa, instituted in 1699. The name is used across Punjabi, Hindi and Nepali communities.

Amrit sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 25 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

  • It is used across Hindu and Sikh traditions and for both sexes.
  • Two syllables, short and easy to spell.
What to consider

  • Amrita is the feminine and is far more common in the United States.
  • It is rare outside South Asian communities.
