Amorette

Spenser coined Amoret for The Faerie Queene in 1590, and French already had amourette as a common noun. The trouble is what the French word means: not a great love but a small one, a flirtation, an affair not expected to last.

The story of Amorette
Spenser named a character Amoret in the third book of The Faerie Queene, where she represents married love and is separated from her husband for most of the poem; the name entered English use from there, alongside Britomart and Una from the same work. French meanwhile had amourette as an ordinary word with an ordinary and slightly deflating meaning, and English writers who knew French would have heard it. The name has stayed very rare in English, and its American best year is 1971, in the middle of a fashion for -ette endings that also carried Paulette, Nanette and Colette.
Meaning
little love
From French amour, love, with the diminutive -ette. As a French common noun amourette means a trivial or passing love affair, and that sense is current. The English literary name Amoret, from Spenser, uses the same construction with the more flattering reading, and Amorette is the fuller French-looking spelling of it.

The Kanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amorette's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kanda climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kanda's path sketches the road Amorette is walking now.
Amorette sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
