The story of Amma
The Akan naming system assigns a name from the day of the week on which a child is born, with a male and a female form for each day: Kwasi and Akosua for Sunday, Kwadwo and Adwoa for Monday, Kwabena and Abenaa for Tuesday, Kwaku and Akua for Wednesday, Yaw and Yaa for Thursday, Kofi and Afua for Friday, Kwame and Ama for Saturday. Every Akan person has one, in addition to any other names, and it is used constantly. Kofi Annan's first name records a Friday birth; Kwame Nkrumah's a Saturday one. The system carried into the Americas with the slave trade, which is why names of this shape appear in colonial records in the Caribbean and the American South, and it is a rare case where a naming practice survived that crossing in a documented form.

Akan, born on Saturday
Amma is the Akan day-name for a girl born on Saturday, given automatically at birth across Ghana and Ivory Coast. It is separately the word for mother in Tamil, Malayalam and several other Indian languages, and a short form of Germanic names in Am-. The 1887 American peak is too early for the Akan source in any quantity.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
