Alliyah
Feminine · “exalted”
English does not begin words with a doubled vowel. That single fact explains Alliyah: Aaliyah's opening aa is the part that looks foreign on an American page, and moving the doubling from the vowel to the l produces a spelling that follows English rules while keeping every sound.

The story of Alliyah
Aaliyah Haughton released her first album in 1994, and the name went from almost unused to a fixture of American girls' naming within three years. Doubled letters are how English marks length and stress, but the convention only works between or after consonants, so aa at the start of a word reads to an English eye as a transliteration mark rather than a spelling. Alliyah is the version that resolves that discomfort: the double letter stays, it simply moves to a legal position, and the name now looks like Allison or Alli. American records show Alliyah cresting in 1995, in the first surge after the debut and years before the singer's death in 2001.

exalted, high (Arabic), or ascent (Hebrew)
Two unrelated Semitic sources share this sound. Arabic aliya is the feminine of ali, high or exalted, the same root as the name Ali. Hebrew aliyah means an ascent, and is also the word for immigration to Israel and for being called up to read the Torah. The respelling does not indicate which family a bearer comes from, and in American use most bearers come from neither: the name arrived through popular music.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The doubled l tempts some readers into AL-ee-yah with a short first vowel, which is the one real cost of the respelling.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Avalon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alliyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Avalon climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Avalon's path sketches the road Alliyah is walking now.
Alliyah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
