X is the clearest case: it does the work of two consonants, and English is the only major European language that uses it that way at the end of words. The same instinct produces Alexsis and Alexsandra, and it is visible in Q, which in English is never written without a following u, so that Qwentin and Quwan add a letter to a cluster that already implies it. None of these is an error in the ordinary sense, since a reader recovers the intended sound without difficulty. What they are is evidence that the writers are thinking in sounds rather than in letters, spelling out what they hear and adding a letter for each piece of it, which is exactly what a phonetic speller does.
