The story of Alexie
The verb alexein is the root of a whole family: Alexander, Alexis, Alexandra, Alexios, and through Russian Alexei. The Hittite Alaksandu, a treaty partner of the Hittite king and ruler of a city in western Anatolia, has been argued since the 1920s to be the same name, which would make it one of the oldest personal names in continuous use anywhere. The feminine forms in English are recent: Alexis crossed to girls in the United States in the 1980s, and Alexie, Alexia and Alexa followed. Alexie's best year on file is 1998. In Russia Alexei is firmly a man's name, which is a separate tradition from the same root.
Meaning
defender, one who wards off
From Greek alexein, to ward off, defend or protect. Alexander combines it with andros, of men, giving defender of men; Alexis is the bare verbal noun, a helper or defender. This spelling is a feminine form built with the -ie ending, and it inherits the verb rather than the compound.

Alexie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kathrin climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kathrin's path sketches the road Alexie is walking now.
