The story of Albion
The name reaches us by a long chain. A Greek geographical poem of about the sixth century BC, known only from a fourth-century AD Latin paraphrase, mentions two great islands called Ierne and Albion, which are Ireland and Britain. Pytheas of Massalia sailed north around 325 BC and used the name too. By Roman times Britannia had replaced it in official use, and Albion survived as a poetic and antiquarian word, revived by English writers from the sixteenth century onward as a deliberately archaic name for the country. Blake used it as a mythological figure. The Gaelic Alba, meaning Scotland, is the same word still doing daily work, which is unusual for a name this old. As an American given name Albion belongs to the nineteenth century and peaks in 1881.

Ancient name for Britain, origin disputed
Two derivations compete. One connects it to Latin albus, white, for the chalk cliffs of the south coast, which is the traditional explanation and is at least as old as Pliny. The other takes it from a Celtic root meaning world or land, related to Old Irish Albu, which is the Gaelic name for Scotland and survives in Alba. The second is now generally preferred by Celticists, since the name appears to be Celtic rather than Latin, but neither is settled.
Pronouncing Albion
AL-bee-un
Three syllables, stress on the first. The Gaelic Alba is AL-uh-puh, with the b said as a p, which is the regular Gaelic treatment of that consonant between vowels.
