Alaynah
Feminine · “possibly 'rock' or 'handsome”
Alaynah spells a long a with the -ay- digraph, which is the device that reshaped a whole generation of American names: Jayden, Kayden, Rayna, Alayna, Braylee. The underlying name is Alana, a feminine of Alan, and Alaynah is its most fully Americanized dress — ay for the vowel, and a terminal h to close it. It reached its highest American use in the mid-2010s.

The story of Alaynah
Alan came to Britain from Brittany in 1066 and became a standard English and Scottish name. The feminine Alana is much later — an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century formation, helped along in Ireland by the coincidence with a leanbh. Alanna and Alayna followed in twentieth-century America. The -ay- spelling that gives this form its shape is a specific and datable American development: from about 1990, parents writing a long a in a name increasingly chose ay over a or ai, which is what produced Jayden from Jaden, Kaylee from Kalee and Alayna from Alana. Alaynah adds the terminal h that the same period liked, and arrives at the most thoroughly respelled version of the name in use.
Meaningscholars disagree
possibly 'rock' or 'handsome'; possibly Irish 'O child'
Alan itself is unsettled. It arrived in England with Breton followers of William the Conqueror, and the Breton name may rest on a word for rock, or on one meaning handsome, or on the tribal name of the Alans; specialists have not decided. A separate and genuinely Irish reading exists for the feminine: a leanbh, 'O child', a term of endearment that English speakers heard as a name. Both explanations are real and neither has won, which is why careful sources list Alana twice.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Teonna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alaynah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Teonna climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- The spelling forces the correct vowel, which the plainer Alana does not always do.
- Lana, Ally and Laynie are all available as short forms with different registers.
- The name is common enough in sound to be familiar and rare enough in spelling to be individual.
- At least six spellings share this sound, so hers will be asked for and mistyped constantly.
- The ay-plus-h combination dates the name closely to the 2005-2020 window.
- The meaning is genuinely contested, so there is no short answer to give.
