Where it comes from

The story of Alainna

Brittany had been settled from Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries and kept a Brittonic language closely related to Welsh and Cornish. Its lords were major participants in the Norman conquest — Alan Rufus, a Breton, received one of the largest landholdings in England and built Richmond Castle — and Breton settlement in Yorkshire and East Anglia followed. The names came with them and became thoroughly English: Alan, Brian and Conan are all Brittonic in origin and none is Germanic, which makes them the smallest and least noticed layer in the post-Conquest name stock. Alainna peaks in America in 2000.

Meaningscholars disagree

Breton, of uncertain sense — possibly "rock" or "handsome"

Alan is a Breton name whose derivation is not settled; candidates include a word for rock and one for handsome or noble, and a link to the Alans, an Iranian people, has also been proposed. Alaina and Alanna are modern feminines, and Alainna is a further respelling. Irish álainn, beautiful, is often given as the source of Alanna and is a separate word that has become attached to the name by resemblance.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lainey and Lana are ready short forms that stand alone.
  • It is soft, three syllables and easy to say in English.
  • The base name has a documented Breton history in England.
What to consider
  • Alaina and Alanna are more common and are said differently from each other.
  • The Breton etymology is genuinely unsettled.
  • The doubled n adds a letter and no sound.
