Alayna
Feminine · “Not firmly established”
Alayna is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 35,589 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Alayna is the phonetic American cousin of Alaina and Alana, spelled the way English actually reads it: the -ay- can only be said one way. Behind it sits a name that Breton knights carried into England, and behind that a pattern of soft three-syllable names that English speakers have been fond of for centuries. It has been on record in the United States since the years just after the Second World War.

The story of Alayna
The name Alan came into England with Breton followers of William the Conqueror in the eleventh century and stayed, becoming an ordinary English name for the next nine hundred years. Feminine forms — Alana, Alanna, Alaina — grew up around it much later, mostly in English-speaking countries in the twentieth century. Alongside that line runs Elaine, the Old French form of Helen made famous by the Arthurian romances, which gave the same -laine sound a separate history. Alayna is the American respelling of that shared sound, written so that no one has to guess how to say it.

Not firmly established — the root name Alan has been read as 'rock' and as 'handsome, noble'
Alayna is a modern spelling of Alaina, which reaches back through Alana to the Breton and Old French name Alan; scholars have proposed both a Celtic word for rock and a sense of 'handsome' or 'noble', and neither has won. A second road runs through Elaine, the Old French form of Helen, which is usually read as 'torch' or 'bright'. Two respectable stories, no verdict.

About 1 girl in 680 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 1,734 for Alayna itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leigh test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alayna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leigh climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leigh's path sketches the road Alayna is walking now.
Alayna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled phonetically for English readers: the -ay- forces the intended vowel, which the Alaina and Alana spellings do not.
- Several short forms already in real use — Lainey, Laney, Allie — none of which need explaining.
- Sits inside a large, familiar family of names, so the sound is recognized immediately even where the spelling is new.
- Close relatives exist across Irish, Czech, Polish and German usage, so the sound travels well.
- Alayna, Alaina, Alanna, Alana and Alayna's cousin Elena all sound close and look close. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and to receive mail addressed to at least two of the others.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If a definite, quotable meaning matters to you, this name will not supply one — though it has an unusually well-documented journey instead.
- Allie is shared with a long list of A-names, so a second Allie in the same class is more likely than a second Alayna.
- The name is easing back from its high point rather than climbing, so it is likely to feel familiar to adults without being repeated in a classroom.
