Where each name comes from
Alayna
Not firmly established — the root name Alan has been read as 'rock' and as 'handsome, noble'
Alayna is a modern spelling of Alaina, which reaches back through Alana to the Breton and Old French name Alan; scholars have proposed both a Celtic word for rock and a sense of 'handsome' or 'noble', and neither has won. A second road runs through Elaine, the Old French form of Helen, which is usually read as 'torch' or 'bright'. Two respectable stories, no verdict.
Alan → Alana → Alaina → Alayna
How it traveled
The name Alan came into England with Breton followers of William the Conqueror in the eleventh century and stayed, becoming an ordinary English name for the next nine hundred years. Feminine forms — Alana, Alanna, Alaina — grew up around it much later, mostly in English-speaking countries in the twentieth century.
Viviana
alive, living
From Latin vivus, "alive," through the Roman family name Vivianus. Often rendered in English as "lively," which is a gloss rather than a strict translation.
Vivus → Vivianus → Viviana → Vivienne → Vivian
How it traveled
The name begins with the Roman cognomen Vivianus, formed from vivus, "alive" — one of a small group of Latin names built on the plain fact of being living. Its feminine form spread with the Latin church and settled permanently in Italian and Spanish, where the root is still visible to anyone who knows vivere or vivir.

Out loud, and in short
Alayna
uh-LAY-nuh
Three syllables with the weight in the middle. The -ay- spelling settles the question that Alaina and Alana leave open, where some speakers say uh-LAH-nuh instead.
- Lainey — The most common short form; also given as a full name on its own in the US.
- Laney — Same nickname, spelled the shorter way; used both in the family and among friends.
- Allie — Informal, drawn from the first syllable; shared with Allison, Alexandra and Alice, so it may need a surname in a crowded room.
- Lay — A one-syllable clip heard mostly at home rather than in writing.
- Also Ally.
Viviana
vee-vee-AH-nah
That is the Spanish and Italian reading, and the one most Vivianas in the US answer to. English speakers unfamiliar with the name sometimes produce vih-vee-AN-uh, on the pattern of Vivian; both are heard, so it is worth deciding early which one your family uses.
- Vivi — The most common short form in both English and Spanish; informal, and used well into adulthood.
- Viv — The clipped English version, one syllable; also long-standing as a short form of Vivian and Vivienne.
- Vi — Shorter still, more often heard among older generations of Vivians.
- Ana — Taken from the tail of the name rather than the front; stands alone as a given name in its own right.
- Also Vivian.

The trade-offs, name by name
Alayna
Strengths
- Spelled phonetically for English readers: the -ay- forces the intended vowel, which the Alaina and Alana spellings do not.
- Several short forms already in real use — Lainey, Laney, Allie — none of which need explaining.
- Sits inside a large, familiar family of names, so the sound is recognized immediately even where the spelling is new.
To consider
- Alayna, Alaina, Alanna, Alana and Alayna's cousin Elena all sound close and look close. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and to receive mail addressed to at least two of the others.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If a definite, quotable meaning matters to you, this name will not supply one — though it has an unusually well-documented journey instead.
- Allie is shared with a long list of A-names, so a second Allie in the same class is more likely than a second Alayna.
Viviana
Strengths
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Italian and English — same spelling, only a small shift in the vowels.
- Ready-made short forms in real use: Vivi, Viv, Ana.
- A documented Latin line running back to the Roman name Vivianus, with the meaning still legible in the word itself.
To consider
- It sits in a crowded family — Vivian, Vivienne, Viviane, Bibiana — and people will sometimes write one of those instead. Expect a lifetime of small corrections.
- The stress moves depending on who is speaking: vee-vee-AH-nah in Spanish and Italian, vih-vee-AN-uh from some English speakers. Neither is wrong, but the two versions coexist.
- Four syllables is a lot of name, so it pairs best with a surname that gives the mouth somewhere to land — and the short forms are there when it doesn't.
