Lorelai
Feminine
Lorelai is the newer American spelling of Lorelei, the name of a slate cliff on the Rhine where the current narrows and the echo comes back at you. Clemens Brentano invented a maiden to go with the rock in a ballad of 1801; Heinrich Heine's poem of 1824 and Friedrich Silcher's setting turned her into one of the most sung figures in German. Say it aloud and you can hear why it lasted — three easy syllables that end on a rising note.

The story of Lorelai
The rock came first: a high, narrow bend of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, known for its echo and its wrecks. Brentano attached a woman's story to it in 1801, Heine gave her the golden comb and the fatal song in 1824, and from there she passed into German choral music and English poetry alike. Lorelei began appearing as an actual given name in the English-speaking world during the twentieth century, and the -ai spelling arrived largely through a long-running American television series whose lead character carried it exactly this way — which is why nearly everyone answering to it today is young.
Meaningscholars disagree
from a Rhine cliff name read as 'murmuring rock' or 'lurking rock'
The second element, -ley, is an old Rhineland word for rock or reef, and that part is not in doubt. The first is read either from Middle High German lureln, to murmur — fitting for a place famous for its echo — or from lauern, to lurk, for a rock that wrecked boats. Both readings are seriously held, and the name is a place name first, so any 'meaning' is the cliff's rather than a person's.

Stress on the first syllable in American English, with the last syllable rhyming with 'eye'. German speakers put more weight on the final syllable of Loreley. The -ai ending is regularly misread as 'lee', so expect to correct that.

The Tommie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lorelai's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tommie climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tommie's path sketches the road Lorelai is walking now.
Lorelai is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Several ready-made short forms, from Lori to Lola to Rory, each of which already works as a name on its own.
- A documented literary and musical trail running back to the early nineteenth century, which most modern-sounding names cannot offer.
- Familiar in sound while genuinely uncommon — most people will recognize it without having met one.
- Works in both German and English, so it travels without being re-spelled beyond recognition.
- Lorelei is the older and better-known spelling, so this version will be corrected fairly often — on registers, in email, at the pharmacy. Deciding now which spelling you want to defend for eighteen years saves some weariness later.
- The wave behind this spelling is very recent and still rising, so nearly all its bearers are children. That means little company in the older world for now, and a name that may feel more of its moment in twenty years than it does today.
- In Heine's poem the Lorelei sings sailors onto the rocks. Few Americans know the story, but it is worth knowing before someone with a German literature degree mentions it at a party.
