Where it comes from

The story of Tommie

Thomas the apostle, remembered for demanding to see the wounds, gave his name to one of the most-used names in Christian Europe. Thomasina was its medieval feminine, and speech clipped it to Tommie. American families registered the clipping for daughters in the same movement that produced Billie, Jackie and Bobbie, and it peaked around 1930.

Meaning

twin

Through Thomas, from the Aramaic te'oma, 'twin'. The Gospel of John glosses it directly, calling the apostle Thomas 'the one called Didymus' — which is simply the Greek for twin. The name is therefore a nickname that displaced whatever the man was actually called.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The twin meaning is concrete and the Gospel glosses it explicitly.
  • Thomasina is available as a full formal version with real medieval history.
  • It belongs to a documented American practice of unisex short forms.
What to consider
  • It reads as masculine to most English speakers.
  • As a diminutive on the certificate it carries an informal register into adult life.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
