The story of Azalia
Linnaeus named the azalea from the Greek for dry, thinking it a plant of arid ground; in fact azaleas want moist acid soil, and the name has stood for two and a half centuries anyway. Azalia is a given-name spelling and appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
dry
From the Greek azaleos, 'dry', applied to the azalea by Linnaeus in the belief that it grew in dry soil — which it does not. The name is therefore a botanical mistake preserved in Latin. The Greek is documented and the misapplication well attested.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
