The story of Azaliah
Azaliah appears in the second book of Kings as the father of Shaphan, the scribe who reads the newly found book of the law to the king — a small role at the edge of a significant scene. That single mention is the whole biblical record. The name reached English through the same Puritan reading of the entire Hebrew text that produced Keziah and Jedediah, and its recent American use is more likely reached by way of Azalea and Aaliyah, which sound close and come from nowhere near it.

the Lord has set aside
Hebrew Atzalyahu joins a form of atzal, generally read as 'to reserve, to set apart, to lay aside', with Yahu, the divine name. The reading is offered with reasonable confidence and is not beyond argument, since the verb is uncommon. What is certain is that the name has no connection to azalea, which is Greek, from azaleos, 'dry', for a shrub that was thought to like dry ground.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Shylo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Azaliah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shylo climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shylo's path sketches the road Azaliah is walking now.
Azaliah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Azaliah should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- A genuine biblical name rather than a modern coinage, with a documented Hebrew structure.
- Aza, Zali and Lia are three natural short forms.
- Four syllables give it real formality, with everyday forms available underneath.
- It sounds like Azalea and will be assumed to be a form of it, which it is not.
- In the biblical text it belongs to a man, which some families weigh and others do not.
- Four syllables and an unfamiliar shape mean it will be spelled out constantly.
