Where it comes from

The story of Luci

Lucia of Syracuse was an early Christian martyr whose feast falls on the thirteenth of December, close to the winter solstice in the old calendar, and that timing turned her into a festival of light across Catholic and Lutheran Europe alike — the Swedish Lucia processions on the darkest day of the year are the most visible survival. The name has been continuously used in Italy and Spain, and English took Lucy from it. Luci is the Italian and English short spelling, standing where Lucy or Lucie would.

Meaning

light

Latin lux, lucis, 'light', gives the name Lucius and its feminine Lucia. Roman practice was to give it to a child born at first light, which is one of the few name traditions from antiquity that is actually recorded rather than reconstructed. The reading is exact and not in dispute.

Two syllables, stress on the first, said exactly as Lucy. Italian would say LOO-chee, with the c soft before an i, so an Italian reader will pronounce this spelling differently from an English one.

Luci sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 82 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Luci went to 59 girls in 2025, but Lucy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 6,235, which makes it the 28th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,831 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 258 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 27,242 for Luci itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • An exact, documented and genuinely lovely meaning, tied to a time of day.
  • Lucia, Lucy and Lucille all stand behind it as longer formal options.
  • Four letters, easy to say and easy for a small child to write.
What to consider
  • Italian and English read the c differently, so the name is said two ways depending on the reader.
  • Lucy is the standard English spelling and this one gets corrected in writing.
  • It is short enough to read as a nickname on official documents.
