Shylo
Feminine · “Hebrew place name”
Shylo is given to both — 674 girls and 223 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Shiloh was a place before it was a person: a town in the hill country of Ephraim where the Israelites kept the ark, and then, in April 1862, a country meeting house in Tennessee that gave its name to the bloodiest two days the American continent had yet seen. Shylo is what happens when a place name is worn down into a personal one and the biblical h falls off on the way.

The story of Shylo
The name reaches American children by way of a battlefield. Shiloh Meeting House in Hardin County, Tennessee was a log church named, as country churches often were, after a biblical site. On 6 and 7 April 1862 roughly twenty-four thousand men were killed or wounded around it. The battle put the word into every newspaper in the country, and afterwards it was used as a given name in the South in the way Verdun and Ypres later were in France. A second wave came from books and film: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's novel Shiloh won the Newbery Medal in 1992 and was filmed in 1996. The spelling Shylo, however, belongs to neither wave. It peaks in 1978, between them, in the period when American parents were systematically replacing i with y in short names.
Meaningscholars disagree
Hebrew place name, meaning unresolved
The Hebrew Shiloh appears in Joshua, Judges and Samuel as a settlement, and once in Genesis 49:10 in a phrase that has been argued over for two thousand years: until Shiloh comes. Whether that word is a place, a title, a person, or a corrupted text is genuinely unsettled, and both Jewish and Christian commentators have read it every way. The common gloss tranquil or place of rest is a guess built on a possible link to the root sh-l-h, to be at ease. The spelling Shylo replaces the Hebrew i with y and drops the silent h.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Shylo went to 13 girls in 2025, but Shiloh, Shilo and Shyloh are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,167, which makes it the 275th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,610 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Shylo itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leveda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
