Shiloh was the place where the tabernacle stood before there was a temple: the assembly site of the Israelite tribes in the hill country, and the setting of the story of Hannah and her son. The name is also one of the great puzzles of biblical translation, because of a single obscure line in Genesis.

Where it comes from

The story of Shyloh

Shiloh was the religious center of the tribes before Jerusalem, and archaeology has found a destruction layer there consistent with the biblical account of its fall. Its name returned to American ears through a Tennessee battlefield of 1862, named for a small church, one of the bloodiest days of the Civil War at the time. The name came into use for children in the late twentieth century, for both sexes, and the y spelling belongs to the last two decades.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Not established. Tranquil or peaceful is often printed and rests on a doubtful root. The word also appears in a line of Genesis that translators have fought over for two thousand years, read variously as a place, a person, and the phrase to whom it belongs. The place name itself has no agreed etymology.

Shyloh sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2024, with 46 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Shyloh went to 26 girls in 2025, but Shiloh, Shilo and Shylo are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,167, which makes it the 275th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,712 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 61,818 for Shyloh itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real archaeological site with a documented history.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which some families want.
  • The sound is soft and easy, and nobody stumbles over it.
What to consider
  • Shiloh is the standard spelling and will be written instead by most people.
  • The clipped form Shy is an English word that a child may not want applied to them.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so the tranquil reading found online is a guess.
