The story of Tommie
Thomas was a modest name in Europe until the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 made him one of the most-visited saints in Christendom, after which the name was everywhere in England within a generation. English clipped it to Tom and stretched that to Tommy and Tommie. The -ie spelling was the American preference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and Tommie for boys peaked around 1930.
Meaning
twin
From the Aramaic te'oma, 'twin'. The Gospel of John glosses the name for its Greek readers by adding Didymus, the Greek for twin, which is unusually helpful of it — most biblical names are left unexplained.
