Aidin
Masculine · “Turkish aydin”
Aidin is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 740 boys against 12 girls since 1880.
Turkey rebuilt its vocabulary on purpose. Between 1928 and the 1930s the state replaced the Arabic script, purged Arabic and Persian loanwords, and promoted native Turkish replacements, and a new stock of secular given names came with it. Aydin, meaning enlightened, is one of them.

The story of Aidin
The Turkish language reform is the most thorough state-directed change any modern language has undergone. In 1928 the Arabic script was replaced with a Latin alphabet in a matter of months; the Turkish Language Association, founded in 1932, then set about replacing Arabic and Persian vocabulary with words drawn from older Turkic sources or newly coined. The effect on naming was direct. Ottoman naming had been overwhelmingly Arabic and religious; the republic promoted names that were Turkish, secular and often simply meaningful words. Aydin, enlightened. Ozgur, free. Deniz, sea. Ufuk, horizon. Baris, peace. Cagri, invitation. A generation of Turkish children carry ordinary nouns and adjectives as names, and the whole class can be dated to a specific political project with a founding year.

Turkish aydin, bright or enlightened
Two real sources produce this spelling. Turkish aydin means bright, luminous or enlightened, and is both a given name and the name of a province in western Anatolia. Irish Aodhan is a diminutive of Aodh, the name of a pre-Christian fire deity, and gives English Aidan. The American record cannot distinguish which a bearer has, though the -in spelling leans Turkish. The peak is 2010.

About 1 boy in 8,715 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 213,510 for Aidin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aidin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
