Aydin
Masculine · “Bright”
Aydin is given to both — 6,491 boys and 205 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Aydin comes from a Turkish word for bright and enlightened — the same word that names a province on Turkey's Aegean coast and one of the country's ordinary, well-worn surnames. In American mouths it lands almost exactly where Aiden lands, which is why it has been quietly at home on class lists here for decades. Two syllables, no silent letters, and a meaning you can say in three words.

The story of Aydin
The source is the Turkish adjective aydın, still an everyday word for bright or enlightened. It has worked as a personal name in Anatolia since at least the medieval period — the fourteenth-century Turkish principality of Aydın, in the west of what is now Turkey, took its name from a man who bore it, and the region keeps the name today. In modern Turkey it functions as both a given name and a common family name. In the United States it arrived with Turkish and Azerbaijani families, and then found a second current: the spelling sits so close to Aiden and Aidan that its American rise and fall follow that whole family's curve rather than its own.
Meaning
Bright, luminous; enlightened, intellectual
Turkish aydın carries both senses at once: physically light-filled, and educated or clear-minded. The second sense is the one Turkish speakers hear first.

Pronouncing Aydin
AY-din
That is the usual American reading, near-identical to Aiden. The Turkish pronunciation is closer to ahy-DUHN, with the stress on the second syllable and the dotless ı as a short, unrounded vowel — worth deciding which one your family will use, because both are correct in their own place.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aydin went to 147 boys in 2025, but Aidyn and Aidin are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 196, which makes it the 733rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 582 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 8,715 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 11,620 for Aydin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Aurelio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aydin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aurelio climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aurelio's path sketches the road Aydin is walking now.
Aydin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for English speakers, and already familiar in shape thanks to the whole Aiden and Aidan family.
- A documented meaning in living Turkish — bright, enlightened — not a reconstructed guess.
- Works in two language worlds without changing form: Turkish, Azerbaijani and other Turkic contexts read it on sight.
- Centuries of continuous use in Anatolia, alongside a province and a surname that keep the spelling current.
- It will be heard as Aiden and written as Aiden, often. Expect to spell it aloud for life, and to correct forms and email addresses more than once.
- The Turkish ahy-DUHN and the American AY-din are genuinely different pronunciations of one spelling. Families with Turkish relatives sometimes end up living with both, which is manageable but worth talking through early.
- It resists shortening — there is no established nickname in either language, so what a child gets called at eight will most likely be the whole name.
- In Turkey the name is strongly represented among older generations, so relatives there may hear it as their father's name rather than a baby's.
