Coleman
Masculine · “little dove' through Irish Colmán”
Coleman is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 17,599 boys against 29 girls since 1880.
Coleman comes to us as a surname first, and it carries two family lines at once: the Irish Ó Colmáin, from the old personal name Colmán, and an English trade name for a man who worked with coal or charcoal. It has been on American birth records since records began, quietly, without ever crowding a classroom. In the mouth it is two plain syllables that nobody has to be taught.

The story of Coleman
Colmán was one of the most heavily used personal names in early medieval Ireland, and Irish martyrologies list scores of saints who bore it, including bishops of the seventh century. From it grew the surnames Ó Colmáin and Mac Colmáin, later anglicized as Coleman. Separately, in medieval England, coleman was written down as an occupational byname for a charcoal burner or coal dealer, and it hardened into a surname the same way Smith and Baker did. Both streams crossed the Atlantic, and by the time American parents began putting Coleman on birth certificates as a first name, the two histories were indistinguishable in spelling — which is why the name reaches families through Irish descent and English descent alike.

'little dove' through Irish Colmán, or 'coal man' through the English trade name
Two separate surnames arrived at the same spelling. The Irish route runs through Colmán, a diminutive of colm, 'dove' (from Latin columba), giving Ó Colmáin and Mac Colmáin. The English route is occupational: a burner or seller of charcoal or coal. Both are well documented, and neither cancels the other — a given Coleman family may descend from either.

The trade-off
- Comes with Cole ready-made — a short form that has stood alone as a given name for generations, so the child has a formal and an informal option from day one.
- Spelled the way it reads: two familiar English words end to end, so it survives phone calls and forms without correction.
- A documented record stretching back to medieval Irish and English surnames, with no invented history to explain.
- Familiar without being everywhere — recognizable to anyone, yet a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- It reads as a surname before a first name, so expect forms filled in backwards and the occasional 'and your first name?' It's the price of every last-name-first choice, and Coleman wears it better than most.
- Coleman is also a long-running American brand of lanterns, coolers and camping gear. Most people never make the connection out loud, but it is there.
- The name has stepped back from its high point, so it sits more with older generations than with newborns right now — which is exactly what makes it available.
- Cole is such an easy shortcut that many Colemans end up going by it. Worth deciding in advance whether that would suit you.
