Cian
Masculine · “ancient”
Cian is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 3,724 boys against 27 girls since 1880.
Cian is one of the short Irish names that has been in continuous use since the Old Irish period, when the word behind it simply meant long-lasting. It is two syllables and four letters, with the soft ee at the center doing most of the work — KEE-an, said quickly. In Ireland it is ordinary; in American classrooms it is still a name people ask about.

The story of Cian
Cian belongs to the oldest layer of Irish naming, formed directly from the Old Irish word cían. In Irish mythology it is the name of the father of Lugh, one of the central figures of the Tuatha Dé Danann tales. It was also borne by Cian mac Máelmuaid, a Munster king who married a daughter of Brian Boru and died at the battle of Clontarf in 1014. Under English-language pressure the name was often written down as Kean or Keane, and the Irish spelling came back into general use with the Gaelic revival; in recent decades the phonetic respelling Kian has traveled alongside it in Ireland and Britain.

Pronouncing Cian
KEE-an
Stress on the first syllable, and the C is hard, as in Kean. Irish speakers often run the two syllables close together. American readers seeing it cold sometimes try KY-an or SEE-an, so expect to say it once before it sticks.

About 1 boy in 8,332 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 11,541 for Cian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ivar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ivar climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ivar's path sketches the road Cian is walking now.
Cian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Short and complete as it stands — four letters, two syllables, nothing to trim and nothing to lengthen.
- A documented history over a thousand years long, from Old Irish texts through the battle of Clontarf to everyday use in Ireland now.
- The meaning is settled rather than argued over: enduring, long-lasting.
- Travels with ready-made alternatives — Kian, Kean and Keane are all recognized forms of the same name.
- The spelling and the sound do not match English habits, so you will be correcting KY-an and SEE-an fairly often. Many families in the US pick Kian for exactly that reason, which is worth deciding before the birth certificate.
- It sits close to Kieran and Ciarán in most American ears, and those are separate Irish names with a separate meaning. Some mix-ups are inevitable.
- Used steadily rather than widely here, so a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom — welcome to some families, a small extra weight of explaining for others.
