Renzo is what Italians did to Lorenzo: they lopped off the front and kept the ending, the way Alessandro becomes Sandro. It has been on US records since before the First World War ended, quietly, and it is climbing now — two syllables, four letters of consonant snap, and a vowel to land on.

How old is the name Renzo?

Where it comes from

The story of Renzo

The line begins with Laurentius, a Roman name meaning a man from Laurentum, which passed into Italian as Lorenzo and spread across Catholic Europe. Italian speakers clipped Lorenzo from the front, leaving Renzo, and by the nineteenth century it was solid enough to stand alone: Alessandro Manzoni gave it to Renzo Tramaglino, the young silk-weaver at the center of his 1827 novel I promessi sposi, read by every Italian schoolchild since. Italian emigration then carried it two ways — to the United States, and in far greater numbers to South America, where Renzo became a standard first name in Peru and Argentina rather than a nickname. Its US strength in California, Texas and Florida sits along that second road as much as the first.

Meaning

from Laurentum — the town whose own name is tied to the laurel

Renzo is the Italian short form of Lorenzo, which comes from the Latin Laurentius, 'man of Laurentum'. Laurentum, a city of ancient Latium, was itself linked by Roman writers to laurus, the laurel — which is why 'laurel' is so often given as the meaning in name books. The step through the place name is the accurate one.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spells itself: four letters, one obvious pronunciation, no silent anything.
  • A full given name in Italian and Spanish-speaking countries, not only a nickname — so it travels without translation.
  • Sits beside the familiar Lorenzo, which is available as a formal long form if you want one on the birth certificate.
  • On US records for over a century without ever disappearing, so it is neither new nor worn out.
What to consider
  • Enzo is far better known in the US right now, and Renzo will be misheard as Enzo often enough to notice — over the phone especially.
  • It is rare enough that he is unlikely to meet another, which some children love and others quietly don't.
  • The Italian 'ts' sound is authentic but not what most Americans will say, so you may end up choosing a house pronunciation and letting the other one go.
