The early Soviet period produced a genuine wave of invented names, promoted as a break with church naming and recorded in the registries: Vladlen and Vilen from Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Marlen from Marx and Lenin, Ninel from Lenin reversed, Melor from an acronym of Marx, Engels, Lenin and October Revolution, and a set taken straight from the industrial program, including Traktor and Elektrifikatsiya. Most were given in the 1920s and 1930s, most did not last a generation, and the people who carried them spent their lives explaining them. It is one of the few state-driven naming experiments anywhere with good documentation. The American Marlen of 1938 has nothing to do with it and is almost certainly a variant of Marlin or a male counterpart to Marlene.
