Where it comes from

The story of Royden

Rye is the grain of cold ground and short summers. It will grow in sandy soil, tolerates frost, and ripens where wheat fails, which is why the bread of northern and eastern Europe was dark for most of recorded history and the bread of the south was not. A hill named for it is a hill where the poorer crop was worth planting. The grain has one strange piece of history attached: the fungus that infects it in wet years produces compounds related to the ones in modern hallucinogens, and outbreaks of poisoning from infected rye bread are now the leading explanation for several medieval and early modern episodes of collective madness.

Meaning

Rye hill

The elements are the Old English words for rye and for a hill, and the name belongs to more than one village. The roy at the front has nothing to do with the French word for a king, which is a separate word that arrived five hundred years later.

Fashion outlook

Royden sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete and can be pointed at on a map.
  • It contains a short, familiar name that can be used alone.
  • It is read correctly on sight.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Rowden, Royce or Hayden, which are all close by.
  • The first syllable looks like the French word for king, which it is not.
  • The name is closely tied to an older American generation.
