In the 1920s and 1930s Soviet families coined names from revolutionary material — Marlen from Marx and Lenin, Vladlen from Vladimir Lenin, Ninel which is Lenin backwards. Very few naming traditions have ever done anything so deliberate, and the names survive in Russia today, carried by people who mostly no longer think about where they came from. The American Marlen came by a completely different road, and both are in the records.
