Saif is the Arabic word for sword, and it has served as a name for as long as Arabic has been written. Medieval rulers and commanders carried it inside the honorific Saif al-Din, "sword of the faith," and Arab astronomers left the same word overhead: the star English calls Saiph, in Orion, comes from saif al-jabbar, the giant's sword. Four letters, one syllable, landing in English almost exactly like the word safe.

Saif first appears in US birth records in 1978 — 47 years ago. The typical Saif is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,500 people named Saif are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Saif

The word sayf is old Arabic, used in pre-Islamic poetry long before it became a common personal name, and it was as a title of honor that it spread furthest — Saif al-Din was attached to generals and sultans across the medieval Islamic world. As Arabic vocabulary traveled with Islam, the name settled into Turkish (Seyfettin, Seyfi), Persian, Urdu, Bengali and Malay, usually either alone or inside those longer compounds. The same word also entered European star catalogs through Arabic astronomy, which is why Orion carries a star named Saiph. In the United States the record is young and urban, strongest where Arabic- and Urdu-speaking families are most numerous — New York, California and Texas.

Meaning

Sword (Arabic)

From Arabic sayf, سيف. The same word appears in the compound names Saifullah ("sword of God") and Saifuddin ("sword of the faith").

Pronouncing Saif

SAYF

One syllable, rhyming with safe. In careful Arabic the vowel glides a little more — closer to SA-eef said quickly. English speakers sometimes try SEEF or SIFE on first sight, so a one-word correction usually settles it.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, one syllable, and phonetic in English — easy to write, easy to say on the first try once heard.
What to consider
  • The meaning is martial and unambiguous: "sword." Within Arabic naming tradition that reads as honor and strength; readers unfamiliar with the tradition may hear only the weapon.
  • Transliteration is the practical headache. Saif, Sayf and Seif are all the same Arabic name, and relatives or documents from different countries may not agree on the spelling.
  • In American classrooms a child with this name will most likely be the only one — a real advantage for most of life, and a small round of first-day corrections at the start of each school year.
