The story of Yovani
Giovanni is one of the most-used men's names in Italian history, and Italian emigration carried it across Latin America as well as to the United States. Spanish speakers, whose j is a throat sound and whose gi is a hard g, needed a spelling that would produce the Italian sound, and Yovani is the result — the Y doing the work the Italian gi does. It appears in Mexican and Central American records in quantity from the 1980s onward.
