The story of Hubert
Hubertus of Liege, an eighth-century bishop in what is now Belgium, is the reason this name spread. The legend attached to him — a nobleman hunting on Good Friday who sees a stag with a crucifix between its antlers and changes his life — made him the patron of hunters across Catholic Europe, and his feast is still marked with hunting horns in parts of France, Belgium and Germany. The Normans carried the name to England, where it settled quietly.
Meaning
bright heart
From the Germanic elements hug, 'heart' or 'mind', and berht, 'bright'. The second element is the same one inside Bertha, Albert and Robert, which is a large and easily recognized family once you know it.

The trade-off
- Identical in German, French, Dutch and Polish, so it crosses a great deal of Europe without adjustment.
- It is currently in real use in Poland, which means it is a living name rather than a museum piece.
- A vivid and specific legend attached to it, which is more than most saints' names offer.
- In English it reads as decidedly old-fashioned, and the short form Bert does not modernize it much.
- The opening HYOO sound is often flattened to HOO, and both will be heard.
