The story of Aeron
River names are the oldest surviving words in Britain. When a population is replaced, the incomers need to ask where the ford is, and the answer preserves the old name; house names, field names and personal names all turn over, and the rivers do not. That is why Britain's rivers carry Celtic names across an Anglo-Saxon landscape, and in a few cases names that appear to predate Celtic itself. Many are divine. Dee is from Deva, goddess. Sabrina, the Severn, appears as a nymph in Geoffrey of Monmouth and in Milton. Boand, the Boyne, is a goddess in Irish myth. Sequana had a healing sanctuary at the source of the Seine with hundreds of votive offerings recovered from it. Aeron belongs to that layer: a name given to water by people who did not distinguish the water from the god in it.

Welsh Aeron, a river name, possibly from a battle goddess
Aeron is the name of a river in Ceredigion, Wales, and of the valley Aberaeron stands at. It is usually connected to a Celtic goddess name, reconstructed as Agrona, from a root meaning slaughter or carnage, though the derivation is not certain. A separate Welsh word aeron means berries or fruit, and some sources prefer that. The American peak is 1994.

The Calven test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aeron's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Calven climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Calven's path sketches the road Aeron is walking now.
Aeron sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
