Adyn
Masculine · “Irish Aodh”
Adyn is given to both — 1,424 boys and 114 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Aidan is a god's name. Aodh was the Irish god of fire and the sun, and Aodhan is his diminutive, little Aodh. When Ireland became Christian the god's name did not disappear; it was carried by a seventh-century monk of Lindisfarne and became a saint's name instead. Adyn is the American spelling of a pagan deity three removes down.

The story of Adyn
A very large share of Irish saints' names are older than Christianity, and the church absorbed them rather than replacing them. Aodh gave Aidan, Hugh and the surnames McHugh and Mackay; Brighid was a goddess before she was a saint, and her feast day sits on the old festival of Imbolc; Lugh, the god the festival of Lughnasadh is named for, survives in place names and in the surname Lougheed. This is not unique to Ireland but it is unusually visible there, because the Irish church was monastic, local and slow to Latinize, and because the manuscript tradition that recorded the saints also recorded the myths. The suffix on Aodhan is worth noting separately: -an and -in are Irish diminutives, and they produce a long list of names that are grammatically affectionate, including Ciaran, Ronan, Fintan and Colman.
Meaning
Irish Aodh, fire
From Irish Aodh, fire, the name of a pre-Christian Irish deity associated with the sun, with the diminutive suffix -an, giving Aodhan, little fire. Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne, who died in 651, carried it into the Christian calendar. The dh in Aodh is silent in modern Irish, so the name is said ay, and the anglicized spellings Aidan, Aiden, Ayden and Adyn all attempt that sound. Adyn peaks in 2006.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jarrel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
