Adin

Adin arrives in American records along two roads that do not know about each other: a Hebrew adjective for gentleness, carried by a family in the book of Ezra, and a Bosnian name built from the Arabic word for faith. Four letters, two entirely separate histories.

The story of Adin
The Hebrew name is one of the quieter ones in the scriptures — no story attached, just a family name in a list of returning exiles — and it came into modern Hebrew use as an ordinary given name in Israel, where the adjective is still current. The Bosnian road runs through the Ottoman centuries, when Arabic and Turkish naming settled into the Balkans; Adin, Adnan and Amar all belong to that layer, and they reach the United States with Bosnian families, most visibly after the wars of the nineteen-nineties. Two names, one spelling, and the family knows which is theirs.
Meaningscholars disagree
gentle, delicate — or, on the Bosnian road, the faith
Hebrew adin means delicate, gentle or refined, and it is a real adjective as well as a name; Adin appears in Ezra and Nehemiah as the head of a family returning from Babylon. The Bosnian and Albanian Adin is a different thing: it is built on the Arabic al-din, 'the faith', the element that closes a long line of names such as Nuruddin and Salahuddin, and stands here on its own. Both readings are documented on their own side.
Pronouncing Adin
AH-deen
Two syllables. Hebrew stresses the second, ah-DEEN; Bosnian stresses the first, AH-din. American English usually says AY-din, which merges it with Aiden and is neither.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Grayling test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Grayling climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Grayling's path sketches the road Adin is walking now.
Adin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, no silent ones, and easy for a small child to write.
- Genuine standing in two living traditions rather than being assembled.
- Short and clean, which pairs well with a long surname.
- American ears hear Aiden and will write it that way constantly.
- The stress falls differently in Hebrew and Bosnian, so the child may answer to two versions.
- Its meaning depends entirely on which of the two roads the family is on.
