Where it comes from

The story of Grayling

English named the fish for its color, while the naturalists' Latin named it for its smell. In northern Michigan the lumber boom stripped the riverbanks and choked the streams with logs and silt, and the grayling was gone from the state early in the twentieth century, leaving its name on the town. The grayling is also the name of a brown European butterfly. As a first name, Grayling rests on the word and on Gray, the short form it contains.

Meaning

the grayling fish

An English word: gray plus -ling, for the fish's silvery gray color. Its scientific name, Thymallus, comes from the Greek word for thyme, after the thyme-like scent that naturalists reported in the fresh fish.

Fashion outlook

Grayling sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real English word with a concrete, documented meaning: a fish of clean, cold rivers.
  • Gray comes built in as a short form.
  • A documented American place connection in Grayling, Michigan.
What to consider
  • People will hear the fish first, and many will not know it; expect to explain.
  • Graylin and Grayson are close enough that the spelling will often be guessed wrong.
