The story of Dwight
Dionysia was a real medieval English woman's name, shortened to Diot, and surnames formed from mothers' names are commoner in English records than people expect. The surname was carried by an eminent New England family — Timothy Dwight was president of Yale — and American families took it as a given name in the nineteenth century. It rose again sharply in the 1940s and 1950s for an obvious reason, peaking in 1953.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Dionysos
The usual account derives the surname from Diot, a medieval English pet form of Dionysia — the feminine of Dionysius, from the Greek god of wine and theater. A competing reading takes it from a Flemish or Dutch personal name. The Dionysia route is the better supported and is the one usually given.

The Wilson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dwight's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wilson climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wilson's path sketches the road Dwight is walking now.
Dwight sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
