Adrina
Feminine · “Latin Hadria”
The Adriatic is the only European sea named after a town, and the town is now inland. Adria was a port in antiquity; the Po has been dumping silt into the delta for two thousand years, and the place is fifteen miles from the water. The sea kept the name of a harbor that no longer exists.

The story of Adrina
Adria sat at the mouth of the Po and was a working harbor from the Etruscan period, trading with Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. The Po carries an enormous sediment load and its delta has advanced steadily seaward ever since, leaving a string of former ports stranded: Adria is now about twenty-five kilometres inland, Ravenna, which was a naval base with a fleet harbor, is about ten. The sea kept the name. That a body of water two hundred and fifty thousand square kilometres in area is named after a small town that has not been on it for a millennium is a good instance of how sticky names are once fixed: nobody renames a sea because its namesake silted up. The personal name follows the same route, from the town to a Roman family adjective to an emperor to six popes to a modern given name.
