It is one of the great unresolved questions of biblical scholarship and one of the most quoted lines in the world.

The story of Micha
Micah is one of the twelve minor prophets, a countryman writing about the exploitation of the poor by people in the capital, and his book is short and angry. Two things from it are permanently in the language. The swords-into-plowshares passage is shared word for word with Isaiah, and scholars have argued for two centuries about the direction of borrowing without settling it. And chapter six asks what the Lord requires and answers in one line — to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly — which is quoted constantly by people who have never opened the book. The name is Michael's question with the shorter form of the divine name.

Hebrew Mikhah, a shortened form of Mikhayahu — mi, who, kha, like, yahu, the Lord. It is the same question as Michael with a different divine element at the end. Micha is the standard German and Dutch spelling and is a man's name there.

The Mariea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Micha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mariea climbed just as high around 1943, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mariea's path sketches the road Micha is walking now.
Micha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Hebrew meaning that is a complete question rather than a description.
- The same spelling in German, Dutch and Hebrew.
- Two syllables with nothing genuinely ambiguous in the spelling.
- Micah is the commoner English spelling and this one will be corrected toward it.
- Most bearers are boys but a real minority are girls, so a form will guess and sometimes be wrong.
- The ch is a throat sound in German and Hebrew and a k in English, so two sayings are in use.
