Zyon
Feminine
Zyon is given to both — 720 girls and 4,325 boys since 1880. See Zyon as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Zyon is Zion with a y, and the y is doing more than decorating. Zion is a specific hill in Jerusalem before it is anything else, and it has accumulated a great deal since — a city, a people, a political movement, and in Rastafari usage a promised place. The y quietly separates the name from all of that.

The story of Zyon
Zion had a long quiet life as a place name in scripture and hymns before it became a personal name, and two quite separate traditions took it up in the twentieth century. Rastafari usage made Zion a name for a promised homeland and put the word into reggae and from there into general circulation. American Christian naming took it up independently. Zyon belongs to a further stage: the y is the standard American respelling move, and it does something useful here, distinguishing a person from a place that a great many people have strong feelings about.

Not established
Hebrew Tsiyon names a hill in Jerusalem, and its own meaning is not recovered — proposals include a dry place, a fortress and a marker, and none is established. The word may predate Hebrew in the area entirely. What is documented is the accumulation: the hill gave its name to the citadel, the citadel to the city, the city to a whole set of ideas about return and belonging. So the name means a place, and the place's name means something nobody can now retrieve.

ZY-un, two syllables, stress at the front, the y sounded like the word eye — exactly as Zion is said in English. Hebrew says tsee-YON with the weight at the back and a ts at the front, which English has never attempted.

About 1 girl in 16,235 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Zyon itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Titania test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zyon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Titania climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Titania's path sketches the road Zyon is walking now.
Zyon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and four letters, said correctly by everyone on first sight.
- The y distinguishes the person from the place on paper, which the standard spelling cannot.
- It carries a genuinely ancient place name with a long documented history.
- Zion is the standard spelling and this will be rewritten as that on most documents.
- The place name carries strong and contested political associations, and those arrive with the name whether or not a family intends them.
- This spelling goes almost entirely to boys, so a girl named Zyon will be read as a boy on every form.
