Isaiah calls Jerusalem Ariel. It is one of the stranger passages in the book — a city addressed by a name that means lion of God, or possibly hearth of God, in an oracle about siege and fire. Shakespeare took the name for a spirit of the air three thousand years later, and the two uses have almost nothing to do with each other.

Where it comes from

The story of Ariele

Ariel appears in the Hebrew Bible as a man's name, as a name for Jerusalem, and in later Jewish angelology as an angel. Shakespeare's Tempest gave it a second life as an airy spirit, and English took it as a man's name on that basis. Its crossing to girls in America is recent and owed largely to an animated film. Ariele is the French and Italian spelling of the feminine, with the e that those languages add, and American records carry it from 1978.

Meaningscholars disagree

lion of God

From the Hebrew ari, a lion, and el, God — which is the standard reading. A second one takes the first element as a word for a hearth or altar, which fits the Isaiah passage better and is preferred by some scholars. The name is used for a place, a man and an angel in different biblical texts, which is part of why it resists a single answer.

Ariele sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 53 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ariele went to 5 girls in 2025, but Arielle, Aryelle and Ariyelle are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 643, which makes it the 440th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,502 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,500 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Ariele itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ari and Elle are both complete standing names and are entirely current.
  • The name has a lion in it, which is unusually vivid for a Hebrew compound.
  • Three open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
  • It is standard in French and Italian rather than an American variation.
What to consider
  • Ariel and Arielle are both far commoner and will be written instead.
  • For a generation of Americans the name belongs to an animated mermaid.
  • The final e is sounded in Italian and silent in French, so the syllable count varies.
