Where it comes from

Our story of Alanda

The Alani were an Iranian-speaking nomadic people of the steppes north of the Caucasus, who turn up in Roman sources as cavalry, were pushed west by the Huns, crossed into Gaul and Spain with the Vandals, and left groups behind in several places including Brittany. Their language did not die. Ossetian, spoken today on both sides of the central Caucasus, is its direct descendant and is the only surviving Northeast Iranian language, which makes it a linguistic relative of Persian marooned a very long way north of everything else in the family. Whether the name Alan comes from them is argued; the people are not in doubt.

Fashion outlook

Alanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ally comes off the front as a short form and is thoroughly established.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts land correctly.
  • It is soft throughout with nothing difficult to say.
What to consider
  • Alana and Alonda are both commoner, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • It reads as a name of an older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • No origin is documented for the feminine, so the meaning question belongs to the man's name.
