Where it comes from

The story of Aryelle

Ariel arrives in English by three routes that do not agree with each other. The biblical Ariel is a place and a piece of temple furniture. The magical tradition, drawing on medieval Jewish and Christian angelology, made Ariel a spirit of air, which is how Shakespeare uses it around 1611 in The Tempest — a play that also gave the modern name stock Miranda, and whose drunken butler carries the hybrid spelling Stephano. Modern Israel uses Ariel as a common men's name. American use is overwhelmingly female and dates from the 1980s; the respelling Aryelle peaks in 2015.

Meaning

Hebrew "lion of God"

From Hebrew ari, a lion, plus El, God. Isaiah addresses Jerusalem as Ariel; the word also appears in the Hebrew Bible for the altar hearth of the temple. In later Jewish and Christian tradition Ariel became an angel's name, and Shakespeare gave it to the air spirit of The Tempest. Aryelle is a modern American respelling with the French feminine ending -elle; the change carries no meaning.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aryelle went to 14 girls in 2025, but Arielle, Ariyelle and Ariele are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 643, which makes it the 440th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,051 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,500 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Aryelle itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
