Jasmyne
Feminine · “the jasmine flower”
Jasmyne is a flower with a very long journey behind it. The plant reached Europe from Persia, and so did its name: yasmin, which is what it is called in Persian and what it is still called, with small adjustments, in Arabic, Turkish, Urdu and half a dozen other languages. English received it through French as jasmine and then, much later, rewrote the middle of it.

The story of Jasmyne
Yasmin has been a woman's name in Persian and Arabic for a very long time, and it entered English twice. The first time it came as a botanical word with no personal use at all. The second time it came as a name, and it arrived from two directions at once — from Persian and Arabic-speaking families who had always used it, and from English speakers taking it up as a flower name alongside Rose, Violet and Ivy. Disney's Aladdin then put a princess named Jasmine in front of an entire generation of American children, and the name and its spellings multiplied. Jasmyne belongs to that moment: the y is doing what y did throughout that stretch of American naming, marking the name as a particular family's rather than the standard one.
Meaning
the jasmine flower
Persian yasamin names the plant, and the word traveled with the plant itself along the trade routes into Arabic as yasmin and onward into Greek, Latin and the Romance languages. There is no hidden meaning underneath the flower — it is the flower, the way Rose and Lily are. What the name gained on the way is a set of associations attached to the plant rather than the word: night-blooming, heavily scented, grown on walls and around doorways from Iran to Andalusia.

Pronouncing Jasmyne
JAZ-min
JAZ-min, two syllables, stress at the front, exactly as the flower is said. The final e is silent and the y changes nothing. Persian and Arabic put the weight at the end instead — yas-MEEN — and that saying belongs to the original rather than to this spelling.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jasmyne went to 5 girls in 2025, but Jasmine, Jazmine and Jazmyne are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 1,761, which makes it the 187th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,755 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 913 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Jasmyne itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Melodee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jasmyne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Melodee climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Melodee's path sketches the road Jasmyne is walking now.
Jasmyne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The word is known in dozens of languages and means the same thing in all of them.
- It is a flower name with a real history rather than a recent botanical borrowing.
- Jas and Mina are both usable short forms and they sit in completely different registers.
- Jasmine is the standard spelling by a wide margin, and this one will be corrected toward it on nearly every document.
- The Disney princess is the first association for most Americans of a certain age, and it is fixed.
- The y and the final e are both silent, so the spelling has to be dictated letter by letter and still comes back wrong.
