Melodee
Feminine · “Greek "song”
Comedy is a revel-song and tragedy is a goat-song. All the -ody words carry Greek aoidē, a singing: melody, ode, parody, rhapsody, prosody. Nobody has satisfactorily explained the goat in tragedy, and the question is two and a half thousand years old.

The story of Melodee
Tragōidia is transparently tragos, a goat, plus aoidē, and the ancient explanations are all guesses: that a goat was the prize, that a goat was sacrificed, that the chorus dressed as satyrs. None is convincing and the question is still open. Komōidia is kōmos, a revel, plus the same element, which is clearer. Parōidia is a song sung alongside another. Rhapsōidia is stitched song, from a word for sewing together, describing how epic performers assembled their material. The whole cluster of English literary vocabulary rests on one Greek word for singing. Melodee peaks in America in 1955.
Meaning
Greek "song, singing of a tune"
From melōidia, melos, a song or limb of a song, plus aoidē, a singing — the same element in ode, comedy, tragedy, parody and rhapsody. Aoidē contracted to ōdē and shows up as -ody in English. Melodee is an American respelling of Melody with the -ee ending; the change carries no meaning.

The Luverne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Melodee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Luverne climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Luverne's path sketches the road Melodee is walking now.
Melodee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
