Kaniah
Feminine
Kaniah ends in a syllable with a surprisingly formal history. The -nia that finishes Tania, Sonia, Kenia and this name is, in Latin and Greek, the ending that turns a people into a country: Armenia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Romania. It arrived in American naming as a sound rather than a suffix, but the shape it lends is the shape of a place.

The story of Kaniah
Names ending in -nia entered English mostly as place names and then as personal ones: Virginia from a Roman family name by way of a colony, Georgia and Carolina from kings. By the twentieth century the ending was familiar enough to attach to anything, and it did — Tania, Latonia, Kenia, Danya, Kaniah. What the ending gives such a name is a certain formality, because the ear recognizes the shape of a country even when it does not recognize the word. The silent h at the end is a separate and later move, borrowed from Hebrew names such as Sarah and Delilah, and by the end of the last century it was available to any name at all.
Meaningnot established
Not established
There is nothing here to translate. The Ka- front is one of the standard opening elements in American combination naming and was chosen for sound. The -nia ending has a real grammatical job in Latin and Greek, where it forms the names of territories, but a suffix separated from the grammar that gave it work does not carry a meaning across. The final h is silent and adds nothing at all. So the honest answer is that the meaning is not established, and no source language will supply one.
Pronouncing Kaniah
kuh-NYE-uh
kuh-NYE-uh, three syllables, stress in the middle, the i long. The competing reading, kuh-NEE-uh, follows the i the way Sonia and Tania do and is heard often. The spelling does not decide between them, so the household has to.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kaniah went to 5 girls in 2025, but Kaniyah, Kaniya and Khaniya are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 85, which makes it the 875th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,067 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 18,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Kaniah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- It is distinctive by design; a person carrying it will rarely meet another.
- Nia sits inside it as a short form that is already a standing name.
- The shape is familiar even though the word is not, so it sounds placed rather than invented.
- Two pronunciations are equally defensible from the spelling, and the correction will need making for life.
- The final h is silent and will be dropped by databases, forms and most people writing it from memory.
- There is no documented meaning to hand over, which matters to some families very much and to others not at all.
