Morelia
Feminine
Morelia is a city in Michoacan, and it was given its present name to honor a priest who led an army. The story of Morelia
Morelos was a parish priest who became the most effective military leader of the Mexican independence movement, drafted a declaration of principles that included abolishing slavery, and was captured and shot before independence arrived. His home city was renamed for him within a decade of his death, and a state carries his name too. American use of Morelia as a given name follows Mexican migration, and it belongs to a real tradition — Mexican and Mexican-American families have long given daughters the names of Mexican places, in the way that English speakers have used Ireland, Georgia and Savannah.

Not established
The city name is formed from a surname, so the meaning question passes to the surname, and Morelos is a Spanish family name whose own derivation is not settled — a connection to moreno, dark or brown, is the usual proposal and it is not demonstrated. So the honest reading is that Morelia commemorates a person, and what that person's family name once meant is another question with no clean answer. The name means the city, and the city means the man.

The Alonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Morelia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alonda climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alonda's path sketches the road Morelia is walking now.

The trade-off
- It names a real and beautiful city with a documented history and a specific person behind it.
- Lia works as a short form and is a standing name in several languages.
- Every letter is sounded in Spanish, so the spelling follows directly from hearing it.
- English speakers compress the ending, so the name is said two ways depending on the room.
- Aurelia, Amelia and Marisela are all close enough in sound to be substituted.
- It reads as a place first and a person second, which is a small distance that place names never quite close.
