Where it comes from

The story of Zionna

Zion has a long American religious life quite apart from the Bible: it names hundreds of churches, gave its name to the Zion movement, appears throughout African American spirituals as a figure for freedom, and is a central term in Rastafari. It became a boys' given name in the United States in the 1990s and rose sharply in the 2000s. Zionna is the feminised form, made with the standard English -a or -na ending, and it peaked in 2011, a few years behind the masculine name's own rise.

Meaningscholars disagree

Hebrew, a place name of uncertain meaning

Tsiyon originally named a specific fortified hill in Jerusalem. Its own etymology is genuinely unresolved — proposals include a root meaning dry place, one meaning a landmark or signpost, and a pre-Hebrew Jebusite origin. The theological extension to mean Jerusalem, the people of Israel and the promised homeland is well documented; the word's original sense is not.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zionna went to 15 girls in 2025, but Ziona, Zyonna and Ziyonna and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 57, which makes it the 903rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,230 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 28,198 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Zionna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
