The story of Zan
Commedia dell'arte companies worked from a fixed set of masked characters: Pantalone the miser, Il Dottore the pedant, Il Capitano the braggart, the lovers, and the zanni, the servants. Zanni is the Venetian form of Gianni, a diminutive of Giovanni, and it was so standard a servant's name that it became the name of the type. Arlecchino, Brighella, Pulcinella and Colombina are all zanni. English took the word in the late sixteenth century, first for a stage clown and then for the behavior, giving zany. Pulcinella went to England as Punch, Arlecchino as Harlequin, and Pantalone gave the word pantaloons and eventually pants, because of the character's distinctive trousers. Very little of the repertoire survives, and four ordinary English words came out of it.

Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious
Zan is most likely a short form of Alexander, through Zander, or of Italian Gianni, whose Venetian form Zanni gave English zany. It may also be an independent coinage. The Venetian z represents the sound Tuscan writes gi, which is why Gianni and Zanni are the same name in two dialects. The American peak is 1950.

The Pio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Pio climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Pio's path sketches the road Zan is walking now.
Zan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three letters and one syllable, as short as a name gets.
- The z opening is distinctive and rare.
- Alexander and Zander are both available as fuller forms.
- It is one letter from an ordinary English adjective.
- It reads as a clipping rather than a full name.
- The source is genuinely uncertain.
