Where it comes from

The story of Zaida

Zaida of Seville was a Muslim noblewoman who left al-Andalus during the upheavals of the eleventh century, converted, took the name Isabel, and became a consort of Alfonso VI of Castile — a real and much-argued-over figure whose story sits right on the seam between the two Spains. The name stayed in Spanish use, and it also traveled with Arabic wherever the language went. American records show it clearly in the late nineteenth century, arriving from Spanish-speaking families rather than directly from Arabic.

Meaning

abundant; increasing

Arabic zaida is the feminine of zaid, from zada, 'to increase, to grow, to add' — the same root behind Ziyad and Zayd. It means increase or surplus in the plain sense of more. The reading is transparent to Arabic speakers and is not in dispute. Spanish took the name during the centuries of Muslim rule and kept the spelling.

Zaida sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 103 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zaida went to 58 girls in 2025, but Zayda is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 114, which makes it the 846th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,049 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 27,712 for Zaida itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Arabic meaning and a genuinely interesting Spanish historical presence.
  • Five letters, no silent ones, and easy for English speakers to say once heard.
  • At home in Spanish and Arabic naming alike, which few short names manage.
What to consider
  • English speakers reach for ZAY-duh on first sight until corrected.
  • Zaida, Zayda and Zaida all circulate and belong to slightly different traditions.
  • It sits close to Zelda and Zaida and gets misheard as both.
