Yennifer
Feminine · “white phantom”
Yennifer is Jennifer written by Spanish, and Jennifer is Guinevere written by Cornwall. Both steps are the same kind of move — a language receiving a name it cannot spell by its own rules and doing the best it can. The result is a Welsh queen's name that has passed through two more languages and come out looking like neither.

Where it comes from
From Gwenhwyfar to Yennifer
The story of Yennifer
Guinevere belongs to the Arthurian material and was almost unusable as a name for centuries because of what the stories say about her. Cornwall kept a form of it going quietly as Jenifer, and English picked that up in the twentieth century, at which point it became one of the most-used women's names in the language. Spanish-speaking families then received Jennifer and wrote it their way: Spanish has no English j sound, so y takes its place, exactly as it does in Yamile and Yesica. Yennifer is that respelling, and it is a standard one in Latin American records rather than an error.
Meaningscholars disagree
white phantom; fair one
Welsh Gwenhwyfar joins gwen, white or fair or blessed, with a second element usually read as a phantom or a smooth spirit — so a white apparition, which is an unexpected thing to name a queen. The reading is traditional and not fully secure. Cornish kept the name as Jenifer when Welsh had let it fall out of use, and Jennifer descends from that. The meaning carries through all of it unchanged and unproven.

YEN-ee-fer
YEN-ee-fer in Spanish, three syllables, stress at the front, the y sounded as a consonant. English readers meeting the spelling cold produce the same shape with a softer opening. Jennifer itself is JEN-uh-fer, so the difference is entirely in the first consonant.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Stephaney test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yennifer's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stephaney climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stephaney's path sketches the road Yennifer is walking now.
Yennifer sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a standard Spanish-language spelling rather than a respelling of anything, which matters in a bilingual household.
- The name behind it has a genuinely ancient Welsh history with a documented royal figure.
- Yeni and Fer are both usable short forms and they sound like two different names.
- In English-language settings it reads as a misspelling of a very familiar name and will be corrected on sight.
- The two languages say the first letter differently, so a bilingual child answers to two versions.
- Jennifer is very strongly associated with one American generation, and this spelling inherits that association.
