Guinevere and Jennifer are the same name on two roads: the French romances gave English Guinevere, while Cornish kept Jennifer as an ordinary living name, largely unknown outside Cornwall until the twentieth century. It became one of the largest names in American history in the 1970s. Latin American families adopting it then faced a spelling problem, because Spanish has no English J sound and its own J is an H — reading Jennifer as Spanish gives hen-ee-FEHR. The Y spelling fixes that, and Yenifer, Yennifer and Jenifer all appear in Latin American and US Hispanic records. Its 2000 peak trails the English name's by a generation.
